Jonny is ploughing in preparation for the drilling of new grass here. We use a 2 year grass lay within an organic rotation as an opportunity to rest the soils to avoid cultivations and as an opportunity to return fertility and organic matter back into the soil that may have been taken out in other parts of the rotation. We mainly use a grass clover lay which provides suitable grazing for both the sheep we have on the farm and areas we may rent out to the organic dairy based here. By grazing the grass we are able to ensure the clover develops which fixes nitrogen in the soil to aid the growth of future crops.
